This program provides a weekend backpack of nutritional food to Midland County elementary school children who receive free or reduced price school lunches. We also have extended this program to two Head Start classes. We are looking to expand this program to other Head Start classes as well as low income children who participate in the Great Start Readiness Program. Approximately 783 children are participating in the program for the 2016-2017 school year. At school on Friday, these students receive their backpacks or plastic grocery bags filled with food items. The food is provided through a program with the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan. In addition, EFPN provides an apple or orange each month. The cost of this program for the 2016-2017 school year is approximately $80.00 per student. This program is overseen by an EFPN volunteer. Countless people in the Midland County School system as well as volunteers outside of the school system help keep this program operating. Many recipient families have remarked how much they appreciate this additional food for the weekend.
